| OUR HISTORY |
The Westside Fire Protection District (WFPD) was formed in December, 1981 and received its letters patent in 1982 when the Westbank and Lakeview Heights Fire Protection Districts amalgamated in response to a growing Westside population.
In 1982, the WFPD served 10,000 people. Today, Westside Fire/Rescue (WFR) serves approximately 35,000 people, including a population of 8,000 people residing on Westbank First Nation reserve lands and services a land area of almost 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres).
The WFPD no longer exists. As of January 1, 2006, Westside/Fire Rescue fell under the umbrella of the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. As of March 1, 2008, Westside Fire/Rescue now falls under the umbrella of the District of Westside. Currently WFR functions with a fire prevention hall, 4 fire halls, approximately 60 paid on-call fire fighters, 34 full-time staff and has an operating budget of
,640,660. The 34 career positions include a Fire Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, an Administrative Assistant, a Fire Prevention Officer, a Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, and 28 firefighters.
